Wow what a fast, busy week!!!! I feel as though the week cruised by. I have recently been taking a Nurtured Heart Class and have been learning so much. Our class has been ending the day by sitting in a circle and talking about our greatness! Each child is full of greatness! He or she might have an awful day, but there was at least one thing he or she did that day that they could be proud of. We focus on being really specific, and having meaningful ideas. I challenge you to ask your child everyday what their greatness is for the day, and to tell them each night before bed something you noticed as their greatness!
***This week we have been hard at work, here are some of our highlights: Science- Good bye Third Graders and Hello Geologists!!! We have finally started to use our "picks" to break our individual mock rocks apart and learn about all the of different materials that make up a rock. Check us out in Action!! Math- Can you believe it, we are finishing up our first Math Unit. The students will have review on Monday and Test on Tuesday! We have learned so many things: number sequences, equivalent names, displaying and analzying data, findind differences, chance events, solving story problems with money, calculators, patterns, and so much more! But it was the elapsed time that through our class for a loop. It was by far our biggest challenge as a class, but our third graders never gave up!! They are such a determined group! Social Studies- Right now in Social Studies we are learning about COMMUNITIES! We have been talking about Urban-city communities, Suburban-communities near cities, and Rural-farming communities! The students are enjoying reading and watching videos showing characteristics of different types of communities! Reading- In reading we focused on a nonfiction text entitled: Schools Around the World. They had so much fun learning about different schools around the world ! As said by Matthew, " Miss Argall, I never knew that kids go on boats to go to schoool." The studnets were amazed by facts they found out. WE also learned the difference between common and proper nouns, and reviewed how to add -ing & -ed. Students, nice job on your high frequency words!!! I can tell you are really practicing at home! Writing- OH NO! We have problems, problems, problems! The students are working on storyboarding and drafting their personal narratives. A personal narrative is a story about yourself that has 3 paragraphs, characters, settings, problem, and a resolution. I love watching the students brains turn as they are thinking of how they felt with each problem! Plus, they are doing magnificent at them since they worked on these last year! Superstar of the week: Check out the superstar of the week HANNAH!!!! The class is getting to know each student in their classroom a little better. The students have also had the opportunity to tell the superstar of the week one great thing about them. So, if your child comes home with thier name on a piece of paper with tons of colorful words around it. Those are all compliments from each student in the class. So fun! Coming soon ... Abigail. **********Thank You!!! I just want to thank all of the parents I have this year. Your children are truely amazing and have made the year so fun! The students work hard and try hard at everything they do. It makes me so proud to watch them in action everyday! I got to share some news with them yesterday. I recently just got engaged and am in the process of moving houses! The class was excited and wanted to know if they could all come to the wedding. I had many offers for flower girls, ring bearers and much more! Haha! So, if you have hear them talking about something this is what it is. I am working hard on getting all the grades updated and will send out an email when you can check the latest powerschool. Thank you so much for your patience during my crazy schedule!!!! Last but not least, check out our moves as we take a brain break!! We have some great DANCERS!!!

Short week means lots and lots of curriculum to get in in a short amount of time! Don’t worry we made sure to get our brain breaks in. Have you heard your child sing the “Gummy Bear Song” maybe talking about other songs they have danced to? Those are our brain breaks. It is important for a child to get a minute break for their brains in between learning! When we weren’t dancing, this is what we were focusing on: Math- This week we learned practiced telling time on an analog clock, measuring with inches and centimeters, and using tally marks and bar graphs to study data. Scroll down to see pictures of us practicing our time and being analog clocks! So much fun!! Reading- In reading we read our first story, Ruby the Copy Cat and reviewed how to identify charters and setting. We used tri-folds to better comprehend the story, and on Friday the students had a comprehension test. They did great!! The students also learned the four kinds of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. This year we are trying something new. No more spelling tests. Why you ask? Please check your students STAR Folder on Monday for a letter explaining it. Your child will learn a skill each week and on Friday will be tested on how they can apply the skill. This week we focused on adding –ed to the words. Thank you for helping your child practice at home. Science- In third grade the students get to experience three big science units: Earth Materials, Electricity and Magnetism, and the Human Body. On Friday the students got their first lesson on rocks! Each student has a partner and their own mock rock. We will be geologists and study the rocks in depth every other day! The days we do not have science the students will have social studies with Mrs. Steinbrink. Writing- The students are off making storyboards for their personal narratives. It is so fun to watch the students be able to orally tell their stories with a partner. They are doing so great making sure to have all the details in their story. Social Skills: We have 10 life skills we have for behavior. Please look down at the bottom of this page to watch our class in action showing you have to be a good listener, how to get the teachers attention, follow directions, and? Coupon Books: The fundraiser has started! Westside will benefit $10 from every book sold. The students are so excited to get selling. It is so beneficial to our school along with so many great rewards for the students who work hard. We talked about how the student should be polite and try to sell them by themselves before asking for help from their parents. Please consider purchasing one and helping you child sell a few more. The coupons are amazing. All of the yellow ones inside are FREE! Such great deals! JAny classroom who sells 100 coupons books earns a free pizza party!! REMINDER: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, make sure you are remembering to send your child to school with a healthy snack each day. The extras we have at school are limited. Also, remind your child how important it is to have them show you their agenda every night and get it signed! Thanks for all you do! Take a Sneak Peek into our classroom...... 1. Listening : How to be a good listener......
I am so excited for this upcoming year. Our class is full of amazing students and I can tell they are ready to work hard and learn lots. This first week the students were introduced to so much. Here is what we are learned this week and will continue to work on:
Everyday Math - This week in math we focused on finding numbers. Numbers are all around us everywhere we look. We also worked on counting by 10’s or other numbers. This helped us to solve number-grid puzzles. We even learned our first two math games, number line squeeze and less than you!! Ask your child how to play these and play with them. If you have a computer your child can visit the Everyday Math website online . Their login is located on a label on the front of their agenda. These games are an essential part of our math series and will help your child grow. Writing: During the first few months of school we will be learning about and writing personal narratives. Personal narratives are stories about ourselves that have a feeling and most importantly a PROBLEM!!. Your students goal for the week was to be able to make a list of at least 15 ideas for problems that he or she could write about in the future. This week, if you can remember a story where your child had a problem in it please share it with them! Social Skills: This year we are focusing on learning the 10 behavior life skills the district has provided for us. We will have school assemblies on them, and in our classroom we are also practicing them. Stay tuned for videos brought to you by our class on how to be a Good Listener, Staying on Task, Following Directions, and Getting the Teachers Attention. The students are having so much fun presenting to the class a good example and a what not to do example! Art Projects: We have completed are first 3 art projects this year. We learned about contour lines and made name tags for our lockers! SO COOL!!! We also talked and brainstormed about goals for the 2012-2013 school year. Each student was able to set and make 3 goals for the year. We even got a head start on our Fall Acrostic Poems. Check out a few pictures of our projects below!! |
