So far I have not been doing very well at updating on Fridays. So in order to keep my promise I am going to tell you that whenever I update on the website I will for sure email you! I am super sad today as I had so many fun pictures of our math lessons we have been doing to share with you and all our computers got reimagined and a lot of my stuff is missing or has been deleted. I am still searching and working with our Tech people in hopes to relocate them. So for now below are a few things we have been working on this week and some reminders for you! Also, look who stopped by our room with goodies today! :) What are we learning right now? Writing- We have begun working on our Personal Narrative Stories. These are stories that have a problem. Today the students began to draft their stories. Math- OUr first unit so far has been review of what they knew from 2nd grade. We practiced using a number grid, telling time, and using calculators. Please make sure your child puts the time in which they did their homelink each night. If possible using a clock that is not digital! Science- We are studying Earth Materials. The students get to work as geologists to observe what is in a simulation rock. They get to use a "pick" and break the rock into pieces next week to discover what is inside. Reading- We have been practicing how to use our SCHEMA! SCHEMA is our background knowledge and how we are able to make connections in a book. We also are studying subject and predicate. The subject is the who in the sentence and the predicate is the what they are doing. Ask your child the next time they are reading if they were able to make any of these three connections: Text to Self, Text to Text, or Text to World! Keyboarding- Remember learning your home row? That is what we are practicing now. I am encouraging the students to not look at their hands and never peck. So far it is going well. Let them go on the website as much as you would like at home. Cursive- Yep, you read this right! Cursive is still being taught in third grade. The students are learning the basic strokes and will begin to work on letters in the follow weeks. Our hope is to have them finish their book by Winter Break! IMPORTANT Reminders: Schools Alive- This is the yellow sheet that is in your child's agenda. For this week we are recording our Active minutes and seeing which class can get the most! Please make sure to fill this out with your child. Keyboarding- The kids are loving our new keyboarding program. I have sent logins with them in their agenda right behind the cover page. These cards are to stay in their agenda. Please allow your child to go on the computer to do keyboarding whenever you can. They will get to do it once a week in our classroom, but if they are loving it please allow them to do it at home. My only request is you make sure they are using home row and you do not let yourself or any siblings go on it. Every time your child is on it I get a report with what they need to work on. Thanks so much! Homelinks- Homelinks in math are to be completed every night. I understand sometimes things come up and you cannot get to them. If this is the case I asked that they be turned in the next day. If you are noticing your child is having difficulties on it please write me a note on the bottom of it saying you had to help them a lot. This way I know when my students might need a little extra guidance. Your student also has a login for math that is on the backside of their keyboarding card in their agenda. They can go on the everdaymath website as much as they would like. Meet Mike Argall! Does his last name sound at all familiar? This is my dad. He works for the Cass County Sheriffs Department and likes to drop by every now an than. He even loaded your kids up with some goodies today and a math problem. They can't wait to see him next time!

Happy Wednesday!!! I am sure you were looking for this on Friday and are probably still wondering where it is! THE POST IS HERE..... a little late I am sorry. OUr second week I think flew by faster than the first. The students are still working hard on procedures and building our classroom community. We have begun review in Math and what it looks like for our homework at night. We even started Cursive and Keyboarding!!! Here are a few important announcements: 1. PTA Fundraiser- Did you know if our class sells 100 books we get a free pizza party? Yes this is wonderful however all the money we raise goes to our fabulous PTA! With this money they have purchased new playground equipment in the past as well as our Westside shirts each year for the students. Please try your hardest to help your student be succesful in at least selling thier first 7 books! :) OUr class is currently at around 35! I know we can boost this number! 2. Shoes- Please make sure your child has thier gym shoes everyday or at least on gym days. We have gym 3 days a week this year and they do not have a lot of time to change into them, so wearing them to school would be the best! Thanks! 3. READ!!!!! Make sure your student is reading 30 minutes everynight. I can't stress this enough. If this is hard for your child read every other page with them to make it more fun! Break up the time, whatever you need to do to get them reading those minutes. Also have them record the time they read at the top of their agenda each night! 4. Student Council - Our class has voted and the verdict is in... our new student council members for this year are: Chloe and Dominic! Congratulations to you both I know you will do an amazing job! Take a peek at our name and goal project we worked on last week below. If you do not see your childs project on here I apologize as they are probably still working hard to finish it! Did you notice how many talented artist we have in our class this year? Stay tuned for Fridays post for more fun pictures of our classroom activities!!
The first week of school has already come and gone! Can you believe it? I hope you are all enjoying your wonderful long weekend and come back refreshed and ready to learn! Did I mention that all of you have GREAT KIDS! We have been working hard on school/ class procedures this week and building our classroom community. It has been fun to get to know everyone. Some of the students have already memorized everyone's name! Next week we are going to start diving into our curriculum but all written homework will be done in school so each student knows exactly what to expect. Here are a few things that might have got miscommunicated or lost in translation on back to school night: 1. Snack- We are so excited to welcome back the Fresh Fruit and Veggies Program Tuesday - Fridays this year! What do you do for Mondays? I sent home a letter in the green back to school folder asking if each student could bring one big box or 2 boxes that amount to 25 servings for our class so that we can have a snack cupboard. This cupboard will be used to give each student a snack on Monday. It works out so nice, plus everyone gets the same snack that day so we have no confusion! What if you child doesn't like the fresh fruit and veggies? Well I ask that they have a back up snack. I know you have already donated a huge box or two for the class drawe,r but these are only for Mondays to share with everyone in the class. THANKS! 2. Agenda- Your child has an agenda in thier black star folder. Please make sure you sign it every night. I know it can get crazy some nights so if a student misses it once I ask that you sign that day tomorrow as well. If the child misses two days they will have to clip down. I want them to know that it is their responsiblity to ask you, so try and help them by making a consistant plan as to when a good time for you to sign it would be! 3. Reading- Students are required to read for 30 minutes everynight. I tell them they do not have to sit down and read for 30 minutes straight, but somehow they need to get 30 minutes in that day. These minutes can be broken into 10 minute intervals if you would like. Maybe 10 minutes when they get home, 10 minutes before bed, and 10 minutes when they wake up. It is all what works best for you and your family. Where can they record these minutes? On the top right page of their agenda is a tiny spot to record the minutes and pages they have read. BE HONEST! I want to know what they are doing. 4. Communication- Please contact me whenever you have a question!!! I am always open to talk and discuss any concerns you might have. I want this to be the best year for you child. So if you are noticing anything that might be bothering you or your child feel free to bring it to my attention. All I ask is that it is in a polite way please! I will email you (my goal is every Friday) with an update on the website including what we have done or pictures from the week! Please take the time to read it! EnJoY tHe PiCtUrEs BeLoW!!!! (I apologize for the some of the answers that are hard to see. The whiteboard and camera flash were being a little stubborn!) Also if you click on the individual picture it will get bigger! What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up? Thank you for all you do and taking an active role in your child's education!!!
